The inconsistent Phillies lost yet another home series to a bad team, this time losing two of three to the 4th worst team in the National League, the San Diego Padres. Gone is the momentum and excitement of last week, when the team won 4 in a row, which included a thrilling comeback victory over the cubs, highlighted by Bryce Harper's walk-off grand slam home run in the 9th inning.
The club only managed 4 hits on Sunday, yet Manager Gabe Kapler, who is on my last nerve, was ever-positive after the game, stating the Phils had swung the bats well. Even the terribly slumping Rhys Hoskins falsely stated that the Phillies 'are playing good baseball."
Truth is, they are what they are for the entire season- an inconsistent squad that lacks true leadership and real emotion and heart.
The players seem to have taken on the attitude of their front office.."If we don't , we don't" ( make the playoffs, that is).
Kapler insults the fans during his post-game press conferences, as though he is watching an entirely different ballgame. the fans aren't stupid but we are gullible and do want to believe. That's why many fans were suckered into believing this team could win and get into the post-season by their recent modest streak, only to be disappointed again.
The Phils go on the road now, 9 games behind in NL East, and 1 1/2 games behind in the wild card race. They play two in Boston this week. The Red Sox are having a tough year but they are always dangerous in cozy Fenway Park. Then it's on to Miami to take on the marlins over the weekend. Normally this should be a good series to win against the dreadful Fish, but Miami always seems to play the Phillies tough. September looms with difficult match ups with teams like the Indians, Braves and Nationals.
I'm a Phillies fan and want them to do well and get into the playoffs, but in another way, I wouldn't mind them losing. Another late season collapse may seal Kaplers' fate, maybe even General Manager Klentek's fate too, and be the best thing for this franchise in the long run.
