The Phillies won their 4th game in a row last night, beating San Diego. Bryce Harper stayed hot, belting a three-run homer to left, while Roman Quinn and J.T. Realmuto also hit home runs. Vince Valasquez pitched 5-plus innings for the win.
The Padres have a terrific farm system and should be good down the road. For now they are not. The Phils should at least take 2 of 3 this weekend.
Drawing on the enthusiasm and momentum from the dramatic Thursday night comeback vs the Cubs, the Phillies jumped on the Padres early and cruised to an 8-3 victory. With the braves losing to the dodgers, the Phils creep to within 7 games of Atlanta in National League East. Philadelphia is now tied for the second wild card spot with Chicago, 2 1/2 games behind Washington.
Zach Eflin returns to the rotation tonight vs San Diego, with Jason Vargas going on Sunday afternoon. the Phillies then go on a brief road trip, playing two in Boston and three in Miami.
Same story for these Phils. When they hit home runs they generally win. They seem to be stealing more bases lately, thanks to Quinn's presence in the lineup. An aggressive approach puts the pressure on the other teams' defense.
With poor teams like the Pirates and Marlins on the agenda the Phillies need to pile up wins before they take on the September likes of Atlanta, Cleveland, Washington and the Mets.
