Again, my opinions and thoughts on sports, local and otherwise...
EAGLES- Well, the Lions game is history. A tough loss, but not the end of the world. Winning two in a row on the road is hard, and if they only had to win one, I would want the Birds to beat Washington this Sunday, as it"s a division game. If you told me at the start of the season the Eagles would be 4-1 going into the big Minnesota game next week I would"ve jumped at it. What a game that should be vs. the Vikings! Sam Bradford"s return...
The Eagles are again fun to watch. Could"nt say that last year. They were kind of boring to be honest, and you knew something bad was going to happen sooner or later.Sports is entertainment. At least be fun to watch.
The Eagles also have hope. A good, young QB is the building block. I"m thinking positive for this season, but know in the back of my mind this team still has holes to fill, and the promise of a few more productive drafts tells me the Eagles, if the right moves are made, could be good...even great...for the next 10 years or so.
I like the Eagles chances vs. the Redskins this Sunday. Washington has won 3 in a row, but they have"nt looked impressive in doing so. The Birds have"nt won in Washington for 2 years.Tough place to play, but if Philly gets ahead early, they take the crowd out of the game and turn their fans against the "Skins.
Key is not to allow those two late turnovers in the Detroit game to snowball into a rash of miscues this week. Cut down on the penalties too. I know the refs were pretty awful last Sunday, but the delay of game penalties were the Eagles own doing. The defense needs to play as they have the first 3 games and during the 2nd half of the Lions game, with aggression.
The Eagles come out with a chip on their shoulder and win..Eagles 23 Redskins 14
FLYERS- So glad the two teens, Provorov and Konecny, have made the team. They should bring even more excitement, speed and toughness to the Flyers squad. I don"t think the Flyers slide this year as many experts predict. They still need more scoring, but they are building a solid nucleus, which will only get better in time.
No Stanley Cup this year but they make the playoffs, perhaps reaching the second round this time. Add a few free agents down the road, once their salary cap is freer, and the sky is the limit.
PHILLIES- Interesting Phillies schedule in 2017. 12 of the first 15 games are against division rivals Nationals and Mets. The Phils go to the Angels and Rangers in inter league play. They have a home-and home series against the Red Sox, and the Mariners, Astros and A"s come to Philly. The Cubs and Dodgers don"t come to Citizens Bank Park until late in the season, Chicago during the last week in August and LA in mid September. The Dodgers are usually a good draw, and visiting late in the year, mid-week, isn"t good for the gate.Still, never too soon ro dream of warm summer days and nights and baseball again. Hopefully the Phillies make next year interesting and fun to watch.
AROUND THE SPORTS WORLD- I"m happy that a few old Phillies are helping their respective teams in the playoffs. Jason Werth, no matter what Phillies fans think of him now, is a money player. With his home run last night in LA (his 15th post-season homer), he tied Babe Ruth and reached #11 on the all time post-season home run list....Chase Utley hit the game winning single tonight for the Dodgers to extend their series with the Nationals to a fifth and deciding game back in Washington..Carlos Ruiz hit a home run last night for LA as well, and former Phils pitcher, J.A.Happ pitched well for the victorious Toronto Blue Jays in moving on to the American League Championship Series vs. the Indians. Happ won 20 games this year for the Blue Jays, the only 20-game winner in the majors this year.
