IN THE NEWS- ELECTION 2016- DISABILITIES

I"m not a very political person, but the choice for President this year seems pretty clear- especially when it comes to a candidate who cares about people with disabilities- Hilary Clinton.

She gave a major speech on the topic of disabilities on September 22, 2016 in Orlando, FLA. "We've got to build an inclusive economy that welcomes people with disabilities", she said.

See the link below to view the speech. It is worth checking out:

As much as Secretary Clinton is positive about people with disabilities, Donald Trump is negative. I have yet to find a speech or instance when he has focused on people with disabilities in a positive light. Sadly, his claim to fame in regards to the issue of disabilities is when he mocked a disabled reporter during the campaign. He has never apologized for this degrading and insulting moment.

There is a commercial out now with a young man who has a disability who mentions the mocking incident and says, "I don"t want a president who makes fun of me-I want a president who inspires me...and that"s not Donald Trump."

So many barriers-both physical and invisible- are being knocked down in our society compared to the past when it comes to disabilities. More accessibility, more jobs , better education, more acceptance of people who have a disability, more understanding. Society isn"t afraid of people with disabilities anymore-we are now being welcomed in life, which has been long overdue.

Hopefully we won"t go back to the Dark Ages when prejudice and discrimination ruled.

Sure, there"s still a long way to go. But I"ve seen change in my lifetime. Change that needs to continue.Ask yourself this question: between the two, who would  you think is more supporting, understanding and sympathetic to disability issues- Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump?

And if Mr. Trump has no feelings towards people with disabilities-even making fun of a disability- then how can we trust him to have our back in the White House when he does such  stupid things?
