PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, WOMENS SOCCER

Beating the Mets 2 of 3 games this weekend, even in New York, was no surprise. The Phillies enter the All-Star break in third place in NL East, 6 1/2 games behind Atlanta.

Jake Arrieta sucked on Saturday night and now it's known why: Arrienta has a bone spur in his right elbow. He may be lost for the season.

Arrieta has not been pitching well all season. He is owed $ 20 million next year. The biggest problem is, who to replace him in the starting rotation. Eflin, Pivetta and Valasquez  all have talent but have under-achieved. With the July trade deadline looming the club needs two starters, two more relievers and an extra outfielder.

BTW Arrieta was stupid with his post-game comments after he hot three Met batters/ He mentioned something about "denting his ( Todd Fraizer) skull."  Arrieta has been a diva and often is unfairly critical of his teammates but not of himself. He has one year left on his contract. He can't be moved now with his arm problems. They only hope is that Arrieta rebounds as he did in 2012 when he had similar medical problems and came back to brilliance.

Arrieta has been only average Philadelphia in two years, while making over $ 800,000 a game. He is annoying and has not delivered.

Thank God for Jay Bruce. He hit two more home runs yesterday. Shame that Andrew McCuthen got hurt. He was a leader both on and off the field, and, along with Bruce, would've given te Phillies more depth.

Aaron Nola finished his first-half at 9-2  and has established himself as the Nola of old. He is the only reliable pitcher in the rotation.

I will analyze the Phillies' first half starting tomorrow in the blog. The Phils come out of the break playing surging Washington, the red-hot Dodgers, the surprising Pirates in Pittsburgh, the rebuilding tigers in Detroit, and division-leading Atlanta.

- I wanted to see the U.S. Woman's soccer team to lose. Not that I'm unpatriotic  and don't  root for American teams. This soccer team is cocky and  arrogant, especially so-called "star" Megan Reputo.  It's all her, a typical millennial, and outwardly asks for more money.

It's fun to see juggernauts finally lose. Remember the UCLA college men's basketball team back in the late-60s and early 70s? Seeing their 88-game winning streak come to a shocking end against Notre Dame was so satisfying.

They will go on with their perfect lives, and some will return in 4 years to defend their Cup. I will root for that Woman's Cup team. Hopefully they are more gracious in their winning ways.
