- The Phillies took care of business in Detroit, sweeping the short two-game series with the Tigers. Detroit is the worst team in baseball and will get even badder once they trade pitcher Matthew Boyd and outfielder Nick Castellanos by the trade deadline.
Both would look great in Phillies' red pinstripes, but neither will come to the phils. Boyd is only 28, a lefty and has a contract into the 2022 season. Castellano leads the majors in doubles and would have even more impressive power numbers away from huge Comirica Field. He can play both corner outfield spots, and a little third base and first.
But Detroit is asking for high prospects. Young players such as Spencer Howard and Alex Bohm should be untouchables. A package of Nick Pivetta, Adam Heasley and another prospect probably wouldn't get it done. The braves, supposedly also interested in Boyd, have far more major league-ready prospects to offer in a trade than the Phillies.
The five game road trip ended with an impressive 4-1 record. Now the Phils come home tomorrow night to begin a crucial nine-game home stand, starting with Atlanta this weekend. Take 2 of 3 and the Phils are only 4 1/2 games behind. Sweep and they are a mere 2 1/2 games behind. Getting swept by the Braves would be disastrous. Not only would the Phils be 8 1/2 games off the lead. GM Matt Klentek might decide to be cautious around the deadline rather then be aggressive.
The Phillies throw their best pitchers against Atlanta this weekend. Arrieta, Eflin and Nola go.
Around baseball, St. Louis is making it's annual push in NL Central, behind the Cubs a mere 1/2 game. The Dodgers are running away with NL West for the 7th consecutive season. The Yankees ( who play in Los Angeles in August, in may be a World Series preview) are up big in AL East, while Minnesota is stumbling in AL Central as the experienced Indians are making their push. AL West is led by Houston, with other the other four teams all jockeying for position.
- The Eagles take the field for the first time today in training camp. From now on it's all football until February/
Carson Wentz staying healthy is the key for the season. The offense is full of weapons. I worry for the defense, still not sure about the linebackers, the secondary and the pass rush. I'm not a big Jim Schwartz fan . It should be an interesting season. more football chat in the weeks ahead.
