PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, NBA

Times they are a'changing. After being dominated by the New York Mets  since 2015, the Phillies have now won six in a row against their hated rival, including Friday night's 7-2 win.

No longer are met fans invading the Phillies' ballpark, with annoying chants of "Let's Go Mets!" Even up at Citi Field Mets fans go to the games for other reasons than to see their baseball team. Last night it was Jerry Seinfeld Night, highlighted by a Seinfeld bobble head give-away.

The Phils broke a 2-2 tie in the 9th inning with a five-run outburst. Vince Valasquez only went five innings but kept the Phillies in the game against brilliant Mets starter Jacob deGrome. Scott Kingery hit the first pitch of the game out of the park, the first time deGrome  surrendered a lead-off home run in his career.

The club played textbook offensive baseball in the 9th, moving runners and getting clutch hit after clutch hit.  The much maligned bullpen also did a good job last night. And let's not forget they were playing the awful Mets.

They remain 6 1/2 games behind Atlanta ( who won 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th inning over Miami). They are back in second place in NL East, as Washington lost, falling behind the Phils by 1/2 game.

Jake Arrieta pitches tonight vs. Noah Synderguard.

Odubel Herrera was suspended for the remainder of the season ( 85 games) by Major League Baseball on Friday. He released a statement ( which probably wasn't written by Herrera, apologizing and "looking forward" to playing again for the Phillies in the future.

He better now come back!

Me, along with the majority of Phillies' fans , don't ever want to see Herrera return. Although charges were dropped by his abused girlfriend, Herrera was guilty because he admitted he was guilty. The organization can't justify bringing a known abuser back to a squad where players and coaches have been active advocates for shelters and programs to help abused women.  Plus, Herrera is a slacker and a lazy, stupid player, not the player he once was. When the Phillies blinded gave him a contract extension Herrera had no reason to get better. He had his money.

Trade or release him after the season. Just never put Herrera back on the roster.

- Kahwi Leonard, the flashiest free agent in the NBA this summer, inked a four-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers last last night. He goes to LA with Paul Grorge ( who was obtained by the Clippers for numerous #1 draft picks).

The Clippers may suddenly be the favorites to come out of the West next season and reach the NBA Finals. Clipper-Laker games should be interesting this season, with the combo of Leonard & George vs.  LeBron James & Anthony Davis.  The Staples Center should be ricking. Maybe Jack Nicolson will make a long-awaited return to the court?
