PHILLY SPORTS CORNER

Wrapping up another week  in Sports....

* Both Pete Rose and Allen Iverson may be legends in their respective sports, and they certainly are icons in Philadelphia sports, but as people, they are lacking.

Ok, everyone makes mistakes. Both are not O.J. Simpson. But both have had second chances. And both are slimy, sleazy guys who have little moral-value.

Iverson again didn't show for a 3-on-3 basketball game this week, a league he helped start and was supposed to promote. Instead, it sounds like he is on a binge again of drinking and gambling.

Iverson was spotted at an Illinois casino the night before he was scheduled to play in a 3-on-3 contest in Dallas.

He bugged out of the event in Philly a few weeks ago due to "doctor's orders." This time, no excuse, ni fact, no one could find Iverson at first.

But should we be surprised? This was the same guy who frequently parked in handicapped reserved spots, would publicly urinate in plants at casinos, and was accused of physically abusing his wife while playing for the Sixers.

And that's the short list.

He is a bad guy, and, as great of a player he was, the fans got sucked into Iverson and often looked the other way when he misbehaved.

Forget the 3-on-3 league returning to Philly anytime soon. I would be surprised if Iverson himself shows his face in the city for a long time.

Meanwhile, we all heard  about the Pete Rose incident this week. Disgraceful! Rose once again brings shame upon himself.

The Phillies' organization did the right thing in canceling next week's planned Pete Rose Wall of Fame ceremony. They graciously let the fans off the hook by making the correct decision. I had tickets to the game. I would've felt pretty awkward if i saw the Phillies honoring an admitted pedophile. Cheer or boo?

Here is another guy who is finished in this town. Rose will never show his face again. Forget any Baseball Hall of Fame dreams now. He's cooked.

He can't be on Fox anymore either, analyzing the playoffs. We wouldn't listen to his "expert commentary.' We would only be thinking this scumbag liked to screw young, underage girls.

Both Iverson and Rose- along with O.J.- should just go away and not bother anyone ever again.

*  How great would it be for Mike Trout to play for the Phillies before his career is over/ I think it will happen, but when?

Trout can be a free agent after the 2020 season. He is from nearby Millville, New Jersey; He is a season - ticker holder with the Eagles; When he is a free agent, he will still be entering his prime.

The Phillies would probably have to sign him to a 10-year deal, or similar to the contract Giancarlos Stanton got with the Marlins. That's ok, it's not my money. And even if you only get five solid years out of Trout- I think it would be more- it's worth it.

The Phils need a face to the franchise. By 2021, if all goes as planned, the team should be contending. Trout may help put them over the top, kind of as Rose did in 1980.

Maybe the Phillies could work out a trade for Trout before then? I doubt it, unless the Angels are sure they can't resign him and they want to get something for him before he walks away for nothing.

So, the Phillies should say to LA, ok, pick any 6 players out of our system. Herrera to replace Trout in center field; Hoskins and Kingery, Nola and Sixto Sanchez as pitchers.

Would you do it? Would the Phillies do it?

I say yes and yes. Prospects are unpredictable. Trout may be one of the greatest players in baseball history.

GM Matt Klentak has an in with the Angel organization. If he hasn't already, he should at least make a call.

If the Phillies have to wait 3 years, so be it. Trout could be the  pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow down the road. It's a road worth traveling.

* Let's not swoon over Phillies' GM Matt Klentak, as a lot of the soft, Philly sports media has done this week, He did what any general manager should do- unload washed-up vets who are on one-year contracts. He got back marginal prospects, if at that. He didn't do anything special.

Sorting out the first base logjam, what to do with second base, and signing the right free agents and making wise trades in the next few years will prove to me if Klentak knows what he is doing or not. Until then, he still doesn't get a Christmas card from me.

* I totally forgot the Football hall of Fame game- Dallas vs. Arizona- was on last night ( yawn). The only good thing about it is that the Eagles aren't in it this year.

I hate the Cowboys. Hopefully major suspensions are looming soon. Why would I waste my time and watch them last night when I can't stand them in the regular season?

The Birds signed a former Buffalo safety yesterday, another guy Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz knows well. Is till fully expect them to sign or trade for a big-time corner back before the season opener. It would be stupid to go to war with these defensive backs, especially after you improved the club so much in other areas.

I trust  GM Howie Roseman will do the right thing before training camp breaks..
