PHILLY SPORTS CORNER

Late news: The Phillies canceled Pete Rose Night this afternoon, scheduled for August 12.

I applaud the Phillies for their decision. They will take a hit on the bobble heads, the sell-out, the ceremony. But it was the right thing to do.

How could you cheer or "honor" a guy who admits to having sex with a minor?

It's a shame- I even had tickets for the Wall of Fame ceremony. But I'm happy the event will not occur.

Pete Rose has always been his worst enemy. Forget the Phllies Wall of Fame- Rose will never get into Baseball's Hall of Fame now.

It may go to his grave with the most hits in major league history, but Rose, as a person, will forever be tainted.

It could've been a great night., a great weekend. Not now.

You can't condone what Rose did, not matter that it was 40 years ago. You can't honor a guy like that. As I said, I liked Rose the player- I dislike Rose the man.

I'll still go to the game on August 12, to see the Phils play the Mets.  And I'll think of what could've been. But kudos to the Phils' organization. They let the fans, who were on the fence whether to attend or not, off the hook.

Ny the way, Rose came out with a statement, agreeing with the Phillies' decision.

Also to the Phillies' credit, they will refund the tickets to Friday's bobble head giveaway and the Saturday Wall of Fame ceremony

. John Middleton and the other owners stepped up here and delivered. Maybe it wasn't an easy choice but it was the right choice.
